Dead Things ON Sticks: TV Series Scripting: Part One: Setting the Table

IN MANY WAYS, the process of writing specs and scripts to get you hired as a writer couldn't be more different than the actual process of production. It's a hard thing to get for the uninitiated. When you're trying to break in, you might spend months on your original pilot spec, or episodic spec, polishing it just so, getting it to the point where you feel you can submit.

Great article from Denis McGrath.

District 9 London cinema trip with @TCEurope

The latest Star Trek movie seemed like a great opportunity to get everyone in the London tech scene out for a geek-out session at a cinema. But despite talking to cinemas about private screenings I drew a blank. But there’s clearly a crowd-sourcing option here which is this: TechCrunch readers all buying tickets at the same cinema for the same day and screening time.

Sounds like an interesting idea. I wonder if there will be enough UK Techcrunch readers in the London area willing to take part to enable a mass booking? The comments have not shown an overwhelming response.

Good news: I will be able to concentrate more on my blogging

Within the contract market the odd dip is to be expected. Contractors
are never 'downsized' since we have no size to be downed. The end of a
contract is never a surprise (or shouldn't be) as it's there in writing.

But we can become complacent in our unique positions within an
organisation if the contract is regularly renewed without much
discussion. Then you can feel a little sad if there is no renewal
pending and the end of the contract looms.

There is not usually a warning that you are not going to be rehired, but
you get a feeling. HR are suddenly testing your chair and Accounts are
asking what size your monitor is. Colleagues are never the first to
know.

One test is to take and make loud recruitment calls within earshot of your
manager. If they look annoyed - you're safe. But if they look a little
sheepish or make an obvious effort not to notice...

Of course, you can outright ask. Frankness is a tool much more readily
available to the contractor that the employee. But the response to a
direct question regarding money is almost as awkward to people as an
enquiry as to whether they think you attractive. They hum and harr as
though being pressed on their expenses.

So it was almost to my relief today that I was told directly I would not
being having my contract renewed.

Though not a surprise, it was a little disappointing having been with
the company for 3 years.

We contractors take it on the chin but there must be a point when you
look enviously at the feet under the desk next to you - and not just
because of their shoes - and wonder what that security must feel like.

Before realising there is no security any more.

So I am available. Let me know if you need a Creative Technologist or
Solutions Engineer or Product Manager or Technical Consultant...

Oh, and get ready for a lot more blog posts.
